Dental Avulsion

Dental Avulsion

Did a tooth just pop out?

This is a dental emergency, and your response in those crucial moments could make all the difference between saving or losing your tooth.

Tooth popping out is called dental avulsion and it occurs when a tooth is forcibly dislodged from its socket due to trauma or accidents. If you have an avulsed tooth, contact Dentalnook immediately for expert emergency care.

Can You Really Save Your Tooth If It Is Avulsed?

Absolutely!

Your natural tooth can be re-implanted, and it is always preferable to keep your natural teeth over any artificial alternatives. The best chances for saving your tooth are within the first hour after avulsion.

How to Handle an Avulsed Tooth?

  • Pick it up by the top part of the tooth (Crown) - If you’re able, pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. This prevents damage to the root’s delicate tissue.
  • Rinse, but be gentle: If the tooth is dirty, rinse it lightly with milk, or even your own saliva. Avoid using water as it may damage the root.
  • Place it back into the socket: Gently try to place the tooth back in its original position. Bite down on a sterile gauze or clean cloth to keep it in place.
  • When re-implantation is not possible: If you cannot put the tooth back in the socket, keep it moist. Place it between your cheek and gums or store it in milk or a tooth preservation solution. Water should only be used as a last resort.

Act Fast As Time Matters

Re-implanting the tooth within the first hour greatly improves the chance of survival. The blood supply to the tooth is interrupted when it is knocked out, so preserving the periodontal ligament (PDL) is essential for the tooth to reattach.

What Happens When You Arrive at Dentalnook?

  • We assess the tooth and root condition and, if necessary, clean any contamination using saline.
  • After storing the tooth properly, we numb the area around the avulsed tooth and clean the socket.
  • We check for any fractures before gently re-implanting the tooth with digital pressure.
  • X-rays may be needed to confirm the correct placement.
  • We place splints to stabilize the tooth for two to four weeks.
  • Finally, sutures are placed, and antibiotics are prescribed to prevent any chances of infection.
  • We will call you for follow-up care and perform RCT typically within two weeks of re-implantation.

What If the Tooth Wasn’t Stored Properly?

We still provide comprehensive treatment for teeth that were not stored in an appropriate medium. Our team ensures the best possible care for a successful re-implantation.

Post-Treatment Tips for Optimal Healing

  • Refrain from contact sports. Ensure you are fully healed before returning to physical activities.
  • A soft diet is recommended as it reduces the risk of disturbing the healing area.
  • Maintain oral hygiene. Brush very gently with a soft brush and rinse your mouth after each meal.
  • Your dentist will advise you to use chlorhexidine mouthwash twice daily for a fortnight or so as this promotes healing.
